I don't know the current situation of all Chinese scholars, but in our field, it is possible to obtain the Excellent Youth Award by publishing two articles in New Phytologist between 2016 and 2020. Since its establishment, only four research groups in our field in China have published in this journal, which is widely recognized as a top journal in our field. Our research group has submitted twice so far, both times being rejected (I am a recipient of the Excellent Youth Award overseas). I see many people saying that Nature Communications and PNAS are low-quality journals, but those who have submitted articles know how difficult it is. Regardless of the content of the article, even the amount of data alone is enough to deter many ordinary PhD students. Generally, having an article published in New Phytologist, PNAS, or Nature Communications in our field makes it easier to find a teaching position at a regular university.
