Round 1 (2025.07.24-2025.10.02): Major revisions
AE 2 summarized the opinions of two new reviewers. Both reviewers acknowledged the innovation of the article and suggested strengthening the explanation of the practical application value of the model.
Approach: Supplement the analysis according to the opinions, further demonstrate the practical application value of the model.
Round 2 (2025.11.25-2026.01.28): Minor revisions
Two new reviewers did not provide new substantive opinions. AE 2 persuaded the previous two reviewers to review the article again and made some supplementary suggestions on the literature citations.
Round 3 (2026.02.14-2026.02.23): Acceptance
From the first submission to final acceptance, this paper took nearly 2 years and 3 months, with a very tortuous process. I was very nervous when communicating with the editor to reprocess the manuscript. My experience is that the reviewer's opinions should be followed as much as possible to minimize communication costs. Although the workload of re-deriving the model was large, theoretical derivation and graphical results are often more persuasive than textual explanations.

AE 1 responsible stage
First round (2023.11.26-2024.03.06): Reject and resubmit. AE 1 believes the article is more suitable to be revised as a Method and questions the model assumptions. Two reviewers overall affirm the originality of the article.
Action: Revise the article according to the reviewers' comments, change it to a Method, and explain the model assumptions.
Second round (2024.06.10-2024.10.11): Minor revisions. AE 1 is satisfied with most of the modifications, still doubts the model assumptions, and proposes new assumptions (but does not explicitly state that the model needs to be rededuced according to these assumptions).
Action: Further explain the model assumptions.
Third round (2024.10.23-2024.11.18): Rejection. AE 1 believes the model should be rededuced according to the new assumptions proposed. (At this moment, regretting not fully understanding AE 1's comments in the previous round, if directly deducing a new model, the following steps might not have happened)
Action: Rededuce the model based on the new assumptions proposed by AE 1, compare and analyze the results of the two assumptions, and further demonstrate the validity of the original assumptions with literature evidence.

Reply [fading]: No, waiting for reviewer assignment means that the Associate Editor is reviewing the paper. Contacting Potential Reviewers is when the review invitation emails have been sent out. Typically, it takes about 1 week to a month for the paper to be sent out for review. If it remains in this status for a long time, it is likely that the paper will not be sent out for review and the Associate Editor is writing a rejection letter.

Congratulations, congratulations. It's not easy at all. This is my first submission, so I would like to ask for your advice. Is "waiting for reviewer assignment" mean it has been submitted for review? How long does this status usually last? I have been stuck in this status for half a month already.

This is the longest submission process I have ever experienced - WRR 4 rounds, a total of 462 days!

Round 1 (2024/11-2025/2): Rejected. Only one of the two AEs provided feedback, praising the experiment and writing but deeming the topic lacking scientific significance. I disagreed and wrote a 1-page rebuttal letter with a student, made adjustments, and resubmitted to WRR.

Round 2 (2025/3-2025/7): Major revision. The rebuttal letter was effective, and it was sent for review within a week, but the response took 130 days (originally 90 days). Three reviewers provided moderate feedback.

Round 3 (2025/9-2026/1): Minor revision. Expected to be quick, but waited 129 days! The AE invited the three reviewers from the previous round, one of whom declined. The AE insisted on finding new reviewers, causing delays. In the end, only two reviewers returned with minimal suggestions.

Round 4 (2026/1-2026/3): Accepted. No external review needed, the AE and editor-in-chief made the decision directly, taking one month.

Overall, the process was too long: the first round took 87 days with no review, and the third round was delayed due to the AE's insistence on finding new reviewers (presumably because the previous reviewers had no further comments). I believe in this situation, there was no need to invite new reviewers, and the AE still seemed to have doubts about my research. Excluding the rejected first round, the actual time taken for the subsequent three rounds was 293 days.

The paper submitted in May 2025 received revision comments in August from two reviewers, both of whom are very professional. One of them is a renowned expert in the industry, and the other is also an expert in hydrology. Their suggestions were very precise. The revised manuscript was resubmitted in September and accepted in December. Water Resources Research (WRR) is one of my favorite journals. To be honest, I quite like the journals under AGU as well.
