In May 2025, the major sub-journal was rejected after the first review, and it was difficult to reimburse the layout fee for the minor sub-journal.

Working with another classmate, we initially submitted our work with full confidence to Nature Photonics, but it was rejected directly. We then submitted to NC, and after two major revisions and one rejection, we tried SA but were rejected immediately. We were thinking of trying PNAS, but considering its reputation, we decided to invest in NSR. After four major revisions, we received feedback. In the second review, two reviewers suggested revisions and additional experiments, with only two weeks given for completion. We requested a one-month extension. In the third review, all reviewers accepted the paper, but there were numerous back-and-forth revisions on the image format, with strict quality control.

I feel that this article is of a high standard, but a year ago, my boss said to only submit to Nat syn or Chem. At that time, NS had no impact factor, and Chem had a score of 23, so I decided to go with Chem. However, I never got around to writing it, feeling like it was not worth it. Later, NS suddenly got an impact factor, but I also noticed NSR. At that time, NSR didn't have many articles on lithium batteries that looked like EES/angew (which were actually quite good). In the end, I wrote it and my PUA advisor submitted it, deleting most of the mechanism and focusing on the methodology. The first article in NSR was on organic synthesis (Lei Aiwen had two electrochemical articles). The first round took about a month to give minor revisions after receiving feedback from four reviewers, single-blind, with Gao Song as the editor. The second round took about half a month to be accepted (our group tends to submit to angew sooner). However, it seems that no one has cited it. Who would have thought that NSR would have articles on pure organic and C-H activation related topics? My advisor also didn't allow me to promote it, feeling that it was not in line with the direction of our group.

This year, there have been many rejections from small NC SA journals expanding, but overall, the quality is still good. And at least SA and small NC journals are open for submission. Every journal has its ups and downs; I have seen OL reject submissions to Nat Cat and N materials go through several rounds of review before being rejected and resubmitted to small NC without review. In the NSR rejection thread, there are also rejections from other disciplines, which is largely dependent on the editor's taste. Getting published may not be as prestigious as in mainstream journals or top-tier journals, but at least it won't be embarrassing.

Therefore, do not be swayed by the high impact factors of domestic journals, such as MP and NSR. Their recognition and strict review process are far inferior to smaller journals. Artificially inflating the impact factor cannot change the objective reality. Our teacher would rather submit to lower impact factor journals like New Phyto than submit to journals like MP or PC from the Institute of Botany. Otherwise, he will remove himself from the list of authors because he feels ashamed.

From being rejected by major journals to smaller journals like NC and SA, the process has been rough. Even in the smaller journals, rejection after the second round was brutal. Finally, considering trying NSR.
