Today I found out that the publication fee for B-class articles (case reports) has increased to 2500CHF, almost 24000 including taxes, when just a few days ago it was 1950CHF. This journal series is really taking advantage of people. They are specifically targeting Chinese people to make money. Now that the Chinese Academy of Sciences has just announced that national funds will not reimburse high publication fees, Frontiers is taking advantage of the situation. It's really despicable.

In the field of reproductive epidemiology, the review process was very smooth. The manuscript was submitted on July 22nd, and the external review comments were received on August 30th. There were three reviewers, and after major revisions and one minor revision, there was a time limit for resubmission, usually 7-10 days. Extension requests are allowed. The final decision on acceptance is made within a week after the last revision, and the article is scheduled to go online on October 1st. The efficiency is high, but the publication fee is expensive, at 3150 Swiss Francs, which amounts to 30,000 RMB including taxes.

Sometimes it's just a matter of luck. During the EA stage, editors have been inviting reviewers. I have edited some articles where reviewers were willing to review in the first round, and the fastest acceptance took about a month and a half. However, there have also been cases where we invited over 100 reviewers for an author, but none were willing to review, including those recommended by the author themselves. So, this stage can potentially be very long.

There is no universal standard for judging the quality of magazines, and this magazine has some good quality articles. The publication of NC-class articles also costs thousands of dollars, which I think is not good, although I can't afford to publish them. Even if I were to publish a few articles a year, I wouldn't be able to afford it.

Review process started on October 30, 2024.
Received feedback from two reviewers on November 5, 2024. One rejected the submission but still provided a lot of feedback. The other reviewer provided 13 suggestions, paying close attention even pointing out incorrect references in my manuscript and suggesting where to add references for certain points. I felt like I had encountered a true expert in the field, some of their suggestions even contradicted the other reviewer's feedback. I started to lose confidence but still patiently made the revisions, resulting in an additional 8 pages. After waiting for nearly 2 months, I received an email from the editor stating that there weren't enough reviewers and asked me to recommend two more. I was confused but recommended two new reviewers. However, the editor never contacted them, as expected.
Received feedback from a third reviewer on February 6, 2025, and made the changes the same day.
Received feedback from a fourth reviewer on February 7, 2025, and made the changes despite feeling overwhelmed. They asked for new reviewers, making the process even more complicated. 
Received additional feedback from the third reviewer on February 15, 2025, stating that further revisions were needed. I thought the requirements were too strict.
Received acceptance email on March 3, 2025.

The article submitted in April, invited two reviewers, one accepted and one rejected. Later, another reviewer was invited and after major revisions, the article was accepted. However, it has been stuck at the fifth step since July. In November, I was informed that new reviewers needed to be invited. The result was unfortunate. Finally, two reviewers were found, one suggesting major revisions and the other suggesting minor revisions. The reviewer with major revisions gave more than 60 comments, which were addressed one by one. The reviewer with minor revisions approved the publication, but the one with major revisions rejected it, as it did not meet their requirements. It's such a waste of time, after 9 months.
