If it meets the criteria, a manuscript number will be assigned and it will be displayed as "Under Review" (at this time, the manuscript has not been sent for review, but has been handed over to the handling editor for review). If it does not meet the criteria, it will be rejected immediately. Once a manuscript enters the "Under Review" stage, it may be rejected directly by the handling editor without external review. In general, if a manuscript remains in the "Under Review" status for more than two weeks, it indicates that it has most likely been sent for review (regardless of whether it has actually been sent for review). After being sent for review, the review process becomes stricter, and if the first reviewer's feedback is not positive enough, the editor will immediately reject the manuscript without waiting for the opinions of subsequent reviewers. In conclusion, the requirements for manuscripts in GCB have become stricter, with a much higher level of scrutiny compared to NC (NC submissions are difficult, but the likelihood of acceptance after submission is greater than 70%). I submitted my paper right at the handover period between the new and old systems, on June 30th. Two days later, it showed "under review". On July 25th, the editor sent an email saying they couldn't find reviewers and asked for more recommendations. On August 20th, the editor sent an update saying they had found two reviewers, one of whom had already returned their comments and the other had requested a few more days.
