received April 15, 2022; accepted November 18, 2022. The first review lasted for a full 5 months. I dared not ask during this period, and it was a time of torment. Fortunately, the feedback from the first review required major revisions, which allowed me to conduct experiments for nearly two months (due to the school closure caused by the epidemic). This is the first article of my doctoral period, and I am fortunate to have it published in PNAS. I am grateful to my supervisor and every person who helped me during the period of responding to the review comments. I hope that my future work will be better recognized by PNAS

I am studying for a Ph.D. in the United States. My advisor is not an academician. The paper was submitted through direct submission in July and was sent for review after 13 days. The external review was completed in less than two weeks. The feedback came back as a rejection because the editor believed that two months would not be enough time to complete the experiments. However, none of the three reviewers provided very negative comments, and the overall preference of the editor was positive. Therefore, we submitted an appeal in September, and the next day PNAS replied that they had received it. In the second week, they replied asking for a point-by-point response. We submitted it at the end of September, and yesterday we received a response from the editor agreeing to revise it extensively within 60 days. I am currently working hard on the experiments, hoping that this revision will be accepted smoothly.

The sacred publication in my heart (direct submission), after a tragic experience with external review, PNAS in the field of geology is definitely not inferior to prestigious journals. Peer review. Last October, I submitted a paper to PNAS and it was sent for review within a week. After a month, all three reviewers provided very high-level comments and requested additional experiments. The paper was rejected, but I was given an opportunity to resubmit. PNAS is actually a bit weird. In April 2014, the American Academy of Sciences added 105 new academicians through elections. For a scientist, this is the supreme glory, but the benefit that comes with it is that academicians can submit four papers to the National Academy of Sciences through "special submission approach" every year. This special review method is that you can freely choose the reviewers and the way to respond to these reviewer comments. For many academicians, this privilege is still quite attractive. But for many scientists, this privilege makes many people think that this journal is a valueless journal.

I haven't published here yet, but I just reviewed a manuscript for PNAS a few days ago. After accepting the review, the editorial office sent a request that "PNAS strives to publish papers of exceptional quality and importance. Please consider the novelty and general interest of this article when preparing your review", and it required the reviewer to return comments back within ten days. When submitting review comments, the system requires the following evaluation of the paper: Suitable Quality? Sufficient General Interest? Conclusions Justified? Clearly Written? Procedures Described? Supplemental Material Warranted? Willingness to Re-review? etc. PNAS has been affected by the impact of OA publications, but its status is equally high, and the impact factor is nothing. I hope that I will have the opportunity to publish one article here in the future.

The PNAS Review is very interesting; my two submissions were a bit long. The reason is that the editor has conducted a preliminary review of the article and proposed detailed revision comments and suggestions. After submitting the revised data according to the comments, the editor found two reviewers, responded for about 1 month, and gave yes or no re: the innovation, universality, data volume, writing, etc., and put forward specific opinions. The supplementary data was modified and submitted. It took a total of 8 months. The overall feeling: Editor is very, very nice, and put forward very good suggestions, greatly improved the article, and we benefited a lot.
