Mid-2025: Submitted Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization (SMO).
October 1st: Submitted to R1. The first two reviewers have basically approved it, and I thought it was a sure thing.
December 19th: The nightmare begins. The associate editor added an extra round of "comprehensive evaluation" without informing me, and brought in a very difficult third party arbitrator.
Early February 2026: Graduation is approaching, but all 5 reminder emails were ignored.
End of February: After waiting for 8 months, it was rejected due to "scope mismatch"!
If it didn't match the scope, why not desk reject in the first week? Why wait 8 months to realize the scope was wrong?
Unfair system: The first two reviewers accepted the experiments and data, but the third one came in with pure theoretical outputs and overturned the conclusions of the first two!
Lesson learned: If you're in a rush to graduate, avoid slow reviewing and heavy theoretical journals! 8 months of sunk cost resulted in a rejection, all previous efforts wasted. Good luck to me, and good luck to everyone to avoid similar pitfalls.

Reviewer 2 is quite good, but Reviewer 3 raised a bunch of issues that had already been explained in the article. It feels like they didn't really understand what the article was trying to achieve and just rejected it outright. They didn't give me a chance to explain the issues, and just rejected it. I wasted three months waiting. Those who want to submit should choose carefully.
