This is still a pure OA journal, not just slow in general. Most editors of other pure OA journals only give around 14 days, and MDPI only gives 7 days. In the future, everyone should try not to choose this journal if they are in a hurry. The quality is actually okay, just a bit slow.

If your manuscript has been in UR for a long time and it is not under the responsibility of the associate editor, there is only one possibility: the reviewer has left. If it is under the responsibility of the associate editor, it is possible that the associate editor has not confirmed in the system due to some reasons. This UR process is similar to some RRC in Esweil. The decision is made by the responsible editor before it moves to DP for the editor-in-chief to make the final decision. The most frustrating thing about this journal is that they do not disclose the names of associate editors. If the associate editor is in China, they can inquire about the situation through other channels. As long as it enters DP, it depends on whether the editor-in-chief has seen it or not.

It is likely that the deputy editor has not been logging in due to some issues, but the initial review should still be visible. If the chief editor has mentioned a coordinating deputy editor for the review process, then the deputy editor is responsible. You can send another email to inquire. Keep a record of it, the process was very rough. Submitted on September 4, 2025, it took nearly 10 months. After the initial review, it was accepted with minor revisions. However, in the following three rounds, one of the reviewers kept requesting new revisions and raising new issues. Finally, the R4 version was accepted. The reviewers were all very diligent and responsible, but the journal itself was extremely slow, especially from mid-January to March 20 of this year, when there was a two-month hiatus. The speed of the journal is closely related to the editor-in-chief, Ulrich Kamp, a professor at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, as updates are only made in the evening, depending on the editor's login time. The time difference with the US is about 12 hours, and even decisions made by the deputy editor of this journal are invalid, as they must ultimately pass through the editor-in-chief again. The quality is good, but for those who are in a rush or looking to graduate, be cautious. The journal is very good, and its impact factor has been steadily rising, now at 5. It is highly likely to become a top journal in the first zone in the next three years. Good luck.
