There is a 211 team without background in China that submitted an article combining geology, geophysics, and artificial intelligence, and thought that the quality was very good. It was rejected without external review, but was accepted eight months later after being submitted to "Petroleum Exploration and Development". The English version was submitted on September 11 in 24, and it was not sent for review until January in 25. The review comments were received on February 20, with major and minor revisions required. R1 revisions were resubmitted on March 17, and the manuscript was tentatively accepted on April 14, pending submission of English language proofreading and Chinese version. Several rounds of back-and-forth with the editor followed, mainly concerning minor issues such as formatting and technical terms. The manuscript was officially accepted on September 9 in R5, after a year-long process. It is unknown why the process was so slow, so graduate students graduating with a manuscript should consider carefully.

It has been 2 months since I submitted my article, and it is still in the hands of the editor without any changes. Is this normal?

During my doctoral studies, I spent a long time polishing and reflecting on a Chinese review article, which was also the only Chinese article I have written. It was submitted in May 2024 and accepted in March 2025. The initial review took nearly half a year, and the reviewers' comments were sharp and professional, greatly helping to improve the quality of the article. It underwent major revisions twice, minor revisions twice, and was translated into English once. The editor was very responsible and had high expectations for the wording and graphics of the article. Overall, it took a total of over 10 months until the paper was accepted, making it one of the slowest journals I have submitted to, but its impact speaks for itself. SCES has a strong reputation, especially in Chinese journals, and is firmly in the top tier. The English version has recently been promoted to the top tier of Zone 1, and I hope it continues to improve.

Submitted two review articles, the first one was sent for review 10 days after submission, and the second one was sent for review 1 day after submission. Hope for a good result from a research group under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The review process is indeed a bit slow. It took more than 4 months to receive the review comments. There were two reviewers. One provided very specific feedback, focusing on minor issues in great detail. The other reviewer focused on the overall direction, including the writing style and the overall ideas of the article.
