The microbiome research used to be very good, but the quality of recent articles has been inconsistent, especially with some domestic teams flooding the field. It's hard to understand how some articles can be published, but it becomes clear when you look at the authors.

The impact factor is high, but it's not a good journal. The articles all follow a standard model without much underlying theory. The impact factor is inflated by the hype surrounding gut microbiota and soil microorganisms. Its actual quality is not comparable to mbio.
